Suunto Vertical 2

Android; iPhone with limits

Suunto says Vertical 2 improves on the original with a brighter, larger LTPO AMOLED, a 1.5-inch panel that Suunto rates at up to 2,000 nits with a 1-120 Hz refresh. It also adds a built-in LED flashlight and a redesigned heart rate sensor. Battery claims run to 65 hours of multi-band GPS and 20 days of smartwatch use.

Cleared health features

Suunto cites no regulator clearance for a health feature on this model. Its heart-rate, sleep and blood-oxygen readings are wellness features.

A clearance says what a feature is allowed to claim, not that it replaces a doctor. Cleared versus wellness features

Features, per Suunto

  • 1.5-inch LTPO AMOLED, 1-120 Hz, up to 2,000 nits, sapphire crystal
  • Integrated LED flashlight
  • Dual-band GNSS, 32GB of free offline maps, heatmaps and Climb Guidance
  • 115+ sport modes, Training Zone with AI Coach
  • 100 m water resistance
  • Stainless steel or titanium bezel

Where the specs put it ahead

  • 65 hours of multi-band GPS, the longest of Suunto's current watches
  • Built-in LED flashlight, which the Race 2 lacks
  • Up to 250 hours in Tour mode for multi-week trips
  • Sapphire, steel and a 100 m rating on the base model
  • Physical buttons work with gloves on, per Suunto

What it gives up

  • 87 g is heavy for running
  • No onboard music storage
  • Message replies from the watch are Android only
  • Priced above the Race 2, so the extra battery and flashlight carry a premium

The two lists above are drawn from the maker’s own pages and prices, not from owner reports. Where owner discussion has been read it appears in its own section below, so the two are never mistaken for each other.

What owners say

From what 18 owners of the Suunto Vertical 2 reported between July and October 2026. Earlier generations are not counted.

The Vertical 2 owners here use it mainly for hiking and trail running, and they like the parts that matter outdoors. The flashlight gets used daily, battery lasts a long time with smart features off, the maps are clear enough to navigate by, and one owner who has also used a Race 2 rates its build higher.

The trouble is software. Watch faces that change or vanish, an overnight black screen, faster drain after the July update and a phone that will not reconnect in the morning all appeared after firmware changes. For multi-day trips the biggest gap is that you cannot pause a recording and go back to the normal watch, so trekkers either lose features or end up with a separate file for each day. A few owners also had one-off tracking misses in open water, cycling and skiing.

It is made for someone who wants the toughest Suunto with a flashlight and long battery for hiking and trail running. If you need a multi-day recording you can pause, routable maps or heavy smartwatch use, owners point to those as the weak spots.

What owners like

  • The built-in flashlight earns its place. Owners use it on trail weekends and in camp, and one uses the red light every night; an owner who moved to a Samsung watch said they missed the flashlight and the battery.
  • Battery goes a long way with notifications and always-on display off. One owner logged about 2 to 3% per hour of road running with the best GNSS setting and 8 to 12% for a four-hour hike with maps, and another missed the battery after switching away.
  • The maps are good for finding your way. Owners call them really good to incredible, with enough detail for any activity, though they are not routable.
  • Build quality stands out. An owner who has also tried a COROS Apex 4, a Fenix 8 and a Race 2 rated the Vertical 2's finish and buttons above all of them, and another prefers its design and size to the Run 2.

Common complaints

  • Watch faces misbehave. Owners have had a chosen face swap to a different layout on its own, a face disappear after an update, and a newly installed face never appear on the watch.
  • Updates have introduced bugs. Owners reported the screen dying overnight until a reboot, battery drain roughly doubling after the July update, a lost custom battery mode, and the phone failing to reconnect every morning.
  • You cannot leave a multi-day activity running and still use the rest of the watch. Two trekkers found weather, timers and other screens locked out unless they ended the recording, and the app has no way to join days into one track.
  • Getting maps onto the watch can fail. One owner's watch never joined any WiFi network, even after a downgrade, so no maps downloaded, and another could not find the map option in a sport mode.
  • Some tracking misses: open-water swims logged a fraction of the distance, a bike ride recorded 6 km of about 15, the first ski run goes uncounted, and sleep data showed implausibly long deep sleep next to other watches.
  • Some Android notifications arrive wrong or not at all, and always-on display dims the map after a while when the watch is used as a bike computer.

Questions owners ask about the Suunto Vertical 2

Can you pause a multi-day hike on the Vertical 2 and use the watch normally?

Not yet. Owners on multi-day treks say you either keep the activity running and lose access to things like weather and timers, or end it and get a separate file for each day. One owner noted the flashlight is still reachable from the activity menu.

How much battery does the Vertical 2 use with maps?

One owner with notifications, always-on display and SpO2 off measured about 2 to 3% per hour of road running and 8 to 12% for a four-hour hike with maps and navigation. The same owner saw drain roughly double after the July update.
