Smartwatch subscriptions: what each maker's paid tier buys

Short answer

No watch here needs a subscription to work. 41 of 53 come from makers that sell an optional paid tier; what it gates ranges from video classes to coaching and deeper analysis.

The tiers, and what they cost

Apple Fitness+ (Apple): $79.99 a year. No watch feature requires it; it adds guided workout and meditation video classes that use the watch's metrics on screen

Google Health Premium (Fitbit): $119.88 a year. Google: 'Most workouts require a Google Health Premium membership', 'Most [mindfulness] sessions require a Premium membership', Stress Management Score 'Detailed score breakdown available with Premium', plus Gemini coaching

Garmin Connect+ (Garmin): $69.99 a year. No watch feature requires it: Garmin's chart keeps activity details, health stats, performance metrics, Garmin Coach plans, courses and LiveTrack in the free app. Connect+ adds Active Intelligence AI insights, nutrition logging, a desktop performance dashboard, live activity on the phone, 3D maps and offline Garmin Trails downloads

Zepp Aura (Amazfit): $69.99 a year. No watch feature requires it; Amazfit sells workout and recovery data in the Zepp App with no subscription. Zepp Aura adds unlimited AI sleep-assistant chats (free users get one message a day), detailed weekly and monthly sleep reports, and the full sleep and meditation music library.

Polar Fitness Program (Polar): $107.88 a year. No watch feature requires it. Polar: 'A subscription to Fitness Program is not required to fully enjoy Polar products or the Flow service'; it adds adaptive 4-week cardio, strength and mobility plans in Polar Flow. Street X is not listed among the compatible watches on Polar's US Fitness Program page

Withings+ (Withings): $99.5 a year. ECG recording, AFib detection and baseline metrics stay free (Withings: "Do I need a subscription to access my health data? No."). Withings+ adds Cardio Check-Up (cardiologist ECG review within 24 hours), the Readiness score, the AI Health Assistant and a nutritionist consultation.

Reading the gate

The question is not whether a tier exists but whether something you would buy the watch for sits behind it. Each watch page quotes the maker on what the tier unlocks, and adds two years of it to the watch price as an optional figure, so the two can be compared at a glance.

12 watches here come from makers that sell no paid tier at all.
